Title BA-Seminar: Polish politics in image and text: Multimodal analysis of protest and election campaign posters (with excursion to Wroclaw)
Description Election posters are a central means of political campaigning and offer a variety of insights into the political messages, strategies and cultural contexts of a country. Above all, protest posters express the needs of a section of society and provide a deep insight into their opinions and demands.
In this seminar, we will take an in-depth look at visual political communication using the example of Poland. On the one hand, we will focus on the linguistic design of these posters and the underlying rhetorical strategies. On the other hand, we will analyze the images and design elements. What effect do shapes and colors have on the recipients? And how can images be analyzed linguistically? This and much more is covered at the beginning of the course: First, the most important theoretical and methodological basics are taught in preparation. The political and social situation in Poland will also be discussed.
In order to gain a better understanding of Poland, its politics, culture and society, the seminar offers a four-day excursion to Wroclaw (22.10.2024- 25.10.2024). Together we will have the opportunity to visit archives and view election posters from past years and work with these media on site. There will also be a varied program consisting of input lectures, practical tasks and also time for our own systematic exploration of the city's linguistic and social landscape. The seminar combines theoretical input with practical analysis and interactive discussions. By working in small groups and presenting your own projects, you will deepen your understanding of the subject matter and gain practical experience.
I look forward to your participation and an exciting examination of visual political communication in Poland!
