Title |
From Vikings to Welfare States: Introduction to Nordic History |
Description |
This course provides an overview of the social, economic, and environmental history of the Nordic countries (Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark), from the Viking Age to the contemporary era, with a particular emphasis on the Early Modern Period. The course consists of lectures, discussions, and home assignments. In preparation for each teaching moment, students will be given an introductory lecture and material for home assignment. This is followed on the next session by discussion based on the homework. The students will be evaluated based on their written home assignments and active participation on the class discussions. In this course, the aim is to introduce students to apply a wider trans-regional perspective to European longue durée history, with an example of different case studies on the social, economic and environmental history from the Nordic countries. Following the Nordic pedagogic traditions, the lecturers wish to foster an encouraging and open learning environment, which encourages students to partake in the class discussions and to critically study the established paradigms of Nordic historical research. |
