In Switzerland, various controversial large and small projects in the field of renewable energy (water, wind and solar) are currently being discussed and planned, some of which have been rejected to a large extent or are well embedded and accepted by the municipality. There are also various communally organized forest owner groups (named in German Burgergemeinden, Kooperationen, French Bourgeoisie und Italian Patriziati) that have come together in the energy sector and developed innovative solutions, but this is not well known. Energy commons associations have also formed in urban centers and have regrouped. This raises the question, particularly for Switzerland with its direct democratic system, of how the problem of sustainable energy supply can be solved in a decentralized manner at the local level and which power processes play a role in this. The focus is on participation in developing solutions between large projects and local initiatives.
This is particularly politically sensitive in view of the new strategy of the Federal Council and Parliament: Both want to promote the strong and, above all, rapid expansion of renewable energy in the form of mega infrastructure projects by 2050 by means of a 'shell decree' issued in 2023. If approved by the people, critical concerns and legal objections from environmental associations and local population groups can be undermined.

The exercise is aimed at BA and MA students who want to write a short research followed by an extended essay in the area of energy transition in Switzerland or who would like to write their later BA and MA thesis in this area. The exercise serves to provide the necessary theoretical and empirical foundations for various 'Ethnographies of Energy Transitions' and also represents the first phase of supervision for BA and MA theses. The exercise is intended to form the basis for a later publication on the topic ' Energy Commons in Switzerland'.
