Description |

Water can be many things: a chemical compound, the basis of human and animal life, a drink, a habitat, a transportation route and - increasingly - an actively traded commodity. While some are campaigning to legally and politically enforce access to water as a human right, others are striving to privatize it and establish trading places for water. This struggle for water as a resource has attracted the interest of anthropology in recent years. One example of this is Andrea Muehlebach's book A Vital Frontier, in which she accompanies activist groups campaigning for free access to water. She sheds light not only on the political struggles associated with this endeavor, but also on the fact that water is increasingly subject to financial market rationales and is thus becoming a speculative tool.
In this course, we will approach water as an anthropological object and ask what the financialization of water means for society. We will read current anthropological literature and talk to activists and experts working on the topic of water. |
