Title Sustainable Electrochemistry
Description The lecture provides an introduction to the basic terms and concepts of electrocatalysis. Selected examples (e.g. water splitting, CO2 utilisation, nitrate reduction, etc.) are used to show how electrocatalytic processes can contribute to the so-called energy transition by sustainably converting environmentally harmful substances into valuable products with the help of electricity. In addition to the technical aspects, the focus is also on fundamental questions of life cycle assessment, which should serve as a basis for the selection and further development of electrolysis processes in the future. In addition, the lecture focuses on how the electrification of the transport sector and the increasing share of renewable energies in the electricity mix are intensifying the need for energy storage systems. Various battery chemistries and their applications and operating principles will be discussed. Furthermore, current trends in research will be discussed to show where e.g. lithium-ion batteries or redox flow batteries have their strengths and weaknesses.
