Title «Gypsy Craze»: Romanticizing attributions and artistic expressions of Roma and Traveller communities
Description "Gypsy music” is hip. "Gypsy bands" can be found in many Western European and American cities, so-called "gypsy music" workshops attract a large number of Western amateur musicians and "gypsy festivals" present music and dance spectacles that supposedly convey a sense of freedom, wildness, authenticity and unbridled emotionality. Upon taking a closer look, however, one soon realises that this has little or nothing to do with the music and dance styles practised by Roma musicians and dancers in their countries and communities of origin. It is presented what Western audiences want to see: a romanticised fantasy about "gypsy-ness".

In this course, we tackle the following from a social and music anthropological perspective: How are notions and terminology of "gypsyness" constructed? How is this construct commonly created and conveyed in literature and art? What forms of musical and choreological expression are practised by Roma, Sinti, Kalo, Kaale, Yenish, Manouches, Shelta and Cant? For what reasons are these artistic forms of expression often withheld from a Western/commercial audience in favour of continued (self-)orientalising stereotypes? And what projects are Roma and Traveller community developing to preserve cultural forms of expression and convey them in a self-determined way?
