This course will be given online!

This seminar will explore the question of how sustainability is reflected, implemented and promoted as a business model by economic and social actors. The focus is on companies and communities (sports clubs, cultural associations, religious communities, interest groups, etc.) of different types and sizes based in Central Europe (Germany and Switzerland). In this seminar we would like to analyse how and why sustainability becomes a business model there. How is sustainability negotiated as a ‘business model’? And how do companies and communities change through the implementation of sustainability strategies? How sustainable is the sustainability propagated in each case actually? Do companies and communities tend to try to create a sustainable image or is there an actual transformation of organisational models and products that makes a tangible contribution to environmental protection? What role do different economic, political, social, legal and cultural framework conditions play at the respective location?

These questions are to be worked out from a social anthropological and a plural economic perspective, taking into account complementary, interdisciplinary combined methods. Different methods (online and offline) will be taught theoretically and applied practically. The students should broaden their horizons beyond the methods of their own subject through interdisciplinary access to specific fields of research. The aim is to show that supposed pairs of opposites such as deductive-logical and inductive-empirical conclusions, qualitative and quantitative methods or holistic interpretations and dissected analyses can be useful methodological complements for the research process.

In addition to the contents and methods of the seminar and the students of both universities getting to know each other, the focus is on an intensive exchange beyond the boundaries of one's own discipline, as well as the cooperative testing of different research methods on concrete contents and within the framework of a (smaller) cooperative research. The concrete research fields and methodological approaches are developed individually with the students against the background of their respective study focus.
