Title PA: PA: "Pile dwellings" - Features, architecture and spatial-temporal dynamics of prehistoric wetland settlements in the Alpine region
Description The prehistoric "pile dwellings" in the Alpine region (ca. 5000-500 BC) are among the most exciting settlement finds in European prehistory. Due to the exceptional preservation conditions in the low-oxygen environment, a large number of architectural elements made of wood have been preserved. Thanks to the systematic dendroarchaeological investigations carried out since the 1980s, the construction history of these settlements can ideally be traced down to the exact year, from the founding of the settlement to its abandonment - usually after a few years. How were the locations of the settlements by the lake selected? What can we say about the architecture of the houses? How were the settlements connected in the landscape? What could have led to the abandonment of the settlements? And what role did the weather and climate-related hydrology of the waters play? How did the settlement landscape change from the Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age? And what could have led to the regularly observed "settlement gaps" on the lake shores?
These research questions - still unanswered today - will be addressed in the seminar on the basis of systematic and comparative analyses of findings in selected regions - Lake Constance and Federsee, Lake Zurich, the Three Lakes region, etc. Catalogues of findings will be compiled as handouts for the student presentations, which could serve as a basis for further research work. We will also be supported by expert presentations on topics such as dendroarchaeology, micromorphology, climate archaeology, etc.
