| Title |
Conspiracy Culture: Truths, Lies, and the Media |
| Description |
Lectured by Ani Baghumyan
Conspiracy theories have always been around and have been studied from various perspectives including sociology, psychology, communication, and history. In this course, we will delve into the psychology of conspiracy beliefs and their impact on society, exploring their interaction with truth, skepticism, and critical thinking, and distinguishing them from these concepts. We will explore questions such as:
· Who are the individuals more prone to believing conspiracy theories?
· Why and under what circumstances can conspiracy theories pose dangers?
· What sets apart conspiracy thinking from critical thinking and healthy skepticism?
· Lastly, what role does the media play in amplifying conspiracy theories?
The course consists of two parts: theoretical and practical. The practical segment will introduce students to the research methods used in investigating conspiracy theories, allowing them to apply these methods to formulate and answer research questions within the class. Please note that prior familiarity with the basics of social science research is assumed.
