Legal Tech and Intelligent Decision Support – Digital Ecosystems and Individuals |
| Description |
The seminar focuses on analysing the opportunities and challenges for users as well as for service providers in Legal Tech. Thanks to increasingly powerful and intelligent IT, a large number of digital technologies have become more widespread across industries but also outside the work domain.
Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence increasingly enable more profound decision-support for professional and non-professional users, even with complex tasks, and can thus lead to higher decision-making quality, often at the same time reducing costs.
However, these technical possibilities have so far been used only cautiously in the legal domain, which is presumably due to its more difficult usage conditions. By not exploiting the recent technological advances, it is not just legal professionals, but also firms and private individuals who are negatively affected.
The findings of a single discipline are not enough to improve this situation, since important and interesting questions arise at the intersection of Legal Science and Information Systems. Topics may include:
• User requirements and resistance of legal users with regard to intelligent decision support
• Design of user interaction with intelligent decision support
• Requirements for legal data and their accessibility in the decision-making process
• Consequences and effects of the use of intelligent decision support in the legal field
• Monetization and economic potential of intelligent decision support in the legal field
• The needs of legal practitioners as users
The exact topics will be announced in the introductory session. In the first part of the seminar, participants will receive an introduction to the basics of the topic. In the second part, participants will work on the topics in small interdisciplinary groups using established scientific methods (e.g., qualitative interviews) and will be evaluated by a final presentation and a written seminar paper.
The aim of the course is to provide in-depth insights into the opportunities and challenges through intelligent decision-support in Legal Tech. On the other hand, theoretical and methodological basics within Information Systems and Legal Science are advanced, which is helpful in preparation for the master thesis. Finally, students will obtain more insights and experience in interdisciplinary research/work — a skill of increasing importance in research and on the job market.
