Title |
Psychology of learning and memory |
Description |
In this seminar we will address learning and memory in different areas of life. We deal with important findings in the areas of acquisition of expertise, orientation in space or memory in social groups as well as socio-technical systems. Particular attention is paid to the possibilities of new technologies in the modelling of learning and memory processes (e.g. by means of neural networks) as well as for supporting people in their learning and memory processes (e.g. with the help of virtual reality). Students are encouraged to actively engage with controversies in learning and memory research. Topics for discussion that will be important in the seminar are, for example: When do information technologies represent an additional burden on human memory, when do they provide support? Does our knowledge of the fact that information stored in neural networks is often difficult to explicate also lend new weight to the importance of human intuition? When are laboratory studies suitable for a better understanding of processes of learning and remembering, and where do they reach their limits? |
