Title |
Trade-offs in the Energy Transition |
Description |
Lecturer: Jana Föcker
The shift from a fossil-fuel dominated energy sector towards renewable energy technologies, known as energy transition, is crucial for mitigating climate change. As the transition involves a great variety of goals and interests that potentially compete with each other, trade-offs between different dimensions arise. Balancing these trade-offs is a big challenge on the way to design targeted energy policies.
This proseminar is divided into two parts. In the first half, we will get to know and discuss relevant concepts (e.g. energy governance) and theoretical trade-offs (e.g. energy efficiency vs. energy sufficiency) of the energy transition. In the second half, we will focus on a specific ongoing renewable energy project in Switzerland and study the trade-offs inherent in this case study. In groups, we will analyse the environmental, social, economic, and political dimensions of the project from the perspective of a specific actor group. In a final debate, we will simulate a decision-making process for the renewable energy project. We will present and discuss our actor group’s main arguments for or against the project and vote at the end from the perspective of our actor group. As an outcome of the debate, we will discuss and analyse the relevant trade-offs of the specific renewable energy project in a following written reflection paper.
