Title |
(Un)Fair Algorithms: Exploring the Societal Implications of Platform Bias |
Description |
Prof. Dr. Silke Adam performed by Victoria Vziatysheva.
Algorithms surround us in almost every aspect of our lives, filtering the information we receive on social media and search engines, or guiding decisions in politics, employment, and healthcare. However, algorithm-driven platforms are often neither neutral nor objective and can reinforce gender and racial biases, as well as stereotypes and misinformation. These processes have become particularly concerning with recent developments in generative AI, such as the launch of ChatGPT and other LLM-based chatbots that can produce new content on demand. Understanding the implications of algorithmic bias and (un)fairness is crucial, as what and how we are exposed to on such platforms can greatly affect the way we perceive social reality.
In this course, students will discuss various aspects of algorithmic bias induced by digital platforms, including its causes and forms, possible consequences for society, and related ethical considerations. Students will become familiar with existing research on the topic and learn how to conceptualize and critically interrogate the role of algorithmic platform affordances and their bias in different contexts, including search engines, social media, and AI assistants. The proseminar will be based on a discussion of readings and practical cases associated related to various social sectors (e.g., journalism, politics, and culture), as well as in-class group activities.
