Title |
Quantitative research methods II: Statistics for linguistics using R (AL/HL) |
Description |
Statistical methods are becoming widespread in linguistics and have found applications in all subfields. This class provides an introduction to data exploration, descriptive and inferential statistics with a focus on applications in (comparative) linguistics using the programming language R. Topics include, but are not limited to: frequentist versus Bayesian statistics; linear, logistic, and multilevel models; clustering and random forests. The class is hands-on and encourages active participation. The focus will be on conceptual understanding and applications to specific problems. We will also learn how to interpret and communicate the results of models, both in writing and in graphics. Some basics in programming (especially R and the tidyverse) are a plus, but not required. |
