Title Pietist and liberal homiletics from the 19th century to the present day
Description Preaching was and is central to the churches of the 16th century Reformation. The reformers agreed that the church was where believers gathered, the word of God was proclaimed "purely" and the sacraments were celebrated properly. The pastor is first and foremost a minister of the divine word, Verbi Divini Minister. Pietism and the Enlightenment led to distortions and upheavals in the history of ideas and mentalities, which stirred up theology and churches and divided them into two camps: the enlightened-liberal camp and the biblically faithful-pietist camp. These two camps have significantly shaped the history of the church, theology and preaching over the last 200 years and continue to do so today, albeit in different ways.
In the interdisciplinary seminar (History of Christianity and Practical Theology), we will use the example of the sermon and the doctrine of preaching, so-called homiletics, to take note of Pietist and liberal sermons, sermon theologies and sermon manuals from the last 200 years, analyse them and question how the Pietist and liberal sermon developed and how they shape sermons and sermon theories in the present day and are able to orientate them.
We will take a comparative look at exemplary sermons and homiletics by different authors.
The course has a theoretical character and does not replace the interdisciplinary module Homiletics.
The literature to be read will be made available on ILIAS.
