Title Excursion in avian migratory behavior
Description Registration deadline 6 September in KSL.

The goal of these excursions is to introduce students to the study of avian migration by visiting two well-known monitoring projects: Col de Bretolet in Switzerland and Fort l’Ecluse in Chevrier, France.

• Col de Bretolet: The Swiss Ornithological Institute has been studying avian migration at the Col de Bretolet located on the border of Valais and France since 1958. Each fall biologists return to the site to ring birds to study the seasonality of their migratory movements and long-distance migration between breeding and wintering grounds. This excursion will involve hiking to the research site (1.5 hours each way) and spending the day observing how trained ornithologists from the Swiss Ornithological Institute capture birds with mist nets, affix numeric rings, collect demographic and morphological data, and release birds harmlessly back into the environment.

• Fort l’Ecluse: This site in Chevrier, France is excellent for watching migrating raptors (birds of prey). The Swiss Ornithological Institute facilitates spotters who count the number of different raptorial species that fly over the site. Each fall tens of thousands of raptors can be seen passing over area, and students will have to opportunity to learn how to identify different species of raptors in flight and how to conduct migration counts.

The excursions will span a total of two Fridays on September 20 and 27. The order is dependent upon weather, but the tentative plan is to visit the Col de Bretolet on September 20 and Fort l’Ecluse on September 27. Transportation will be provided in university vans.
