Title |
Surveying, Mapping and Documenting in Archaeology and Geography |
Description |
Surveying, mapping, and documenting (SMD) cover a wide range of applications: from architecture and engineering over construction to geography, geology, and archaeology.
Surveying is the technique of gathering the position of points or objects and the distances and angles between them in relation to a coordinate system. A special type is the archaeological survey. An archaeological survey can be undertaken in preparation for an excavation to gain more knowledge about the extent and chronological classification within a site or for the exploration of the hinterland of a site. Surveying builds the basis for spatial modeling and representations. A survey can be undertaken with a variety of tools and techniques as ground-based measurements like total stations, levels, and GPS but also aerial photography.
Mapping is the process of creating a visual representation of the surveyed area with two-dimensional plans up to complex three-dimensional models and the use of geographic information systems (GIS) to integrate multiple layers of data.
The whole survey process must be documented adequately so that the approach is comprehensible, and the data is reproducible. |
