Title |
Cultural Geography I: Global Places – Intimate Lives |
Description |
Under the title "Global Places - Intimate Lives", the lecture Cultural Geography I deals with the global entanglements of places and the effects of global demarcations and (re)territorializations on people's everyday lives.
In this lecture, we take a journey through very different places to examine how global movements of people, goods, capital, ideas and technologies manifest themselves in different places around the world. We will attend a session of the UN General Assembly, visit refugees in their tent camps, examine questions of social integration in Parisian banlieus, consume LeBigMac and Bollywood films, immerse ourselves in the digital worlds of Clouds and Tinder and ask in the beauty salon why whiteness is still a global beauty norm.
What is the goal of our journey through these global places? The lecture aims to open up a differentiated view of the historical and current causes and consequences of current processes of de- and reterritorialization and planetary change in very different places in the world. We make use of various geographical, social and cultural science theories in order to grasp the current relationship between space, mobility and culture in times of global crises. A focus on concrete everyday places such as the street, the home or Instagram makes it possible to understand how geopolitical and geo-economic policies influence our everyday lives and vice versa. |
