Type of exam Written exam
Title Perception
Description This course will cover the basics of perceptual psychology. The processes of perception are exemplified by various topics such as the recognition of objects, the perception of motion, or the influence of attention on perception. Due to its impact on possible applications (e.g. in ergonomics, traffic and advertising psychology), perceptual psychology is also able to demonstrate the societal benefits that knowledge about basic psychological functions can bring along. In addition, epistemological implications of perception research will also be discussed in this course.

Literature:
Lecture material will be discussed chapter by chapter and will largely follow the book by Bruce Goldstein, "Wahrnehmungspsychologie - Der Grundkurs," Springer-Verlag Berlin, 2023, 10th edition. The purchase of this book as basic literature is strongly recommended to the students (can be obtained from the bookstore vonRoll at a special price).

For a thematic introduction, the book "Black Mamba oder die Macht der Imagination - Wie unser Gehirn die Wirklichkeit bestimmt" (Fred Mast, Herder Verlag, ISBN: 978-3-451-60087-6) is recommended. The book is available in relevant bookstores, or it can also be purchased as an e-book. It is not an actual textbook, but it is very up-to-date and has well-founded thematic references, making it an excellent initiation into modern perception research. A small collection is available at the library.

The introductory book (Goldstein) as well as supplementary teaching content of the individual lecture hours form the lecture material relevant to the examination. Quizzes will help to check learning progress and many perceptual phenomena can be tested online (both via Ilias).

Learning Assessment:
Written module exam (KSL stem number 422851) along with "Learning and Memory" at the end of spring semester.
