Title |
Introduction into Historical Climatology |
Description |
Historical documents are a unique source of information on past weather and climate, be-cause they describe at the same time past weather extremes and societal responses to such events. This course combines parts similar to lectures with exercises and discussion of rele-vant texts. It introduces into the critical evaluation of climate-related historical documents and presents an overview of climate variations in the last millennium. Moreover, it looks at societal impacts of climate extremes and also deals with present-day discourses on climate change. How trustworthy are data about past climate? How sustainable had been the effort of past societies to cope with weather, climate change and natural hazards? |
