Title |
Social Reproduction & Urban Commons: Crises, Responses, Transformation |
Description |
This interdisciplinary seminar explores the "urban" as a process of social reproduction that brings together the gendered, racialized, classed experiences of life-making. Social reproduction consists of paid/unpaid care work and a material basis; it maintains communities and sustains the labor force that is constantly (re)making the city on a daily and intergenerational basis.
Social reproduction is in crisis: Privatization of basic urban infrastructure, increasing costs of survival in cities (housing, care, food, water, urban green), and growing dependence on wage-labor squeeze urban communities as they struggle to make ends meet. A rising political and organizational response to the crisis of social reproduction is to reclaim the basic urban amenities as "commons": collective ownership and collective management systems for natural and humanmade resources.
This seminar brings together human geography, urban planning, and feminist theory perspectives on social reproduction and commons to explore "seeds for transformative change" that mitigate the crisis of social reproduction, primarily in urban settlements. The seminar builds on in-depth discussions among participants and focuses on the institutional, political, and economic potential of the commoning social reproduction as a mechanism for sustainability transitions. |
