Title Between Integration and Exclusion: The History of Jews in Switzerland in the 19th and 20th Centuries
Description The history of Jewish life in Switzerland, which presumably dates back to Roman times, is characterised by a number of developments and changes. These range from early settlements and flourishing communities through periods of intense marginalisation and persecution to times of integration and legal emancipation. In the 19th and 20th centuries in particular, a time of great social upheaval, the Jewish community in Switzerland experienced decisive challenges and progress. The lecture approaches Jewish life in Switzerland from various perspectives and sheds light on how migration, economic participation, social integration and political marginalisation shaped the lives of the Jewish population. Central topics of the lecture are the path to equal rights, the growth and urbanisation of the Jewish population, anti-Semitic discourses, the refugee policy during the Second World War as well as the period after 1945.
