Recent calls to decolonize knowledge and social frameworks in post-colonies have gained momentum in academia. In the context of India, this decolonial trend has also found an ally in the conservative right-wing movement; where there has been a prevalent shift towards what the Hindu Right perceives as nativism in response to decolonization. They embody this nativism through different formulae as observed in law, architecture, education policies, language use and films to name a few. Through this course we will explore the rhetoric of decolonization that gets employed to reinforce the very power structures that decoloniality seeks to oppose. By exploring how the right wing mobilizes and co-opts the idea of decolonization, this course aims to understand the shifting paradigms of decoloniality in the current political situation and how these shifts can be observed in different avenues of society. We will delve into these questions through interactions with experts from the field, reading works on (de)coloniality and post colonialism and its relationship with the socio-political history of India. Through discussions on various ways in which decoloniality is re-interpreted currently in India, we will seek to answer larger questions concerning coloniality, nativism and the politicization of these notions in a socio-cultural and political environment that is dominated by the Hindu Right.
