Title |
BA (MA) Sachbereichs-/Regionalübung: The end of humanity? The Anthropology of Humanitarianism |
Description |
Be aware: if you sign in for the course, you signed in for the exam!
Humanitarianism—once a central topic of critical reflection in social anthropology—is again emerging as a pressing societal and global challenge. In the early 2000s, waves of displacement, poverty, epidemics, and natural disasters routinely triggered humanitarian interventions by state institutions, international organizations, and local NGOs. These interventions, often framed as unequivocal “good deeds,” called for moral critique and deeper examination.
Today, humanitarianism faces two distinct forms of rejection or lack of recognition. On one hand, states increasingly respond with outright disregard for suffering and a striking form of egoism, exemplified by "Make America Great Again" or "my country first" ideologies. On the other hand, critical academic perspectives have begun to interrogate humanitarianism as a mechanism that may reinforce global inequality.
This course invites renewed anthropological reflection on humanitarianism and solidarity in light of today’s political challenges. Ethnographic case studies and current media debates will serve as key materials for discussion. |
