Title |
MA (BA) Seminar Economic knowledge: Ideas and misconceptions about modern economics |
Description |
Be aware: if you sign in for the course, you signed in for the exam!
Interest rate cuts, inflation, banking crisis: economic issues are currently on everyone's lips. The discourse surrounding them is peppered with terminology and assumptions that suggest that you have to be an expert to understand exactly what is going on. Economic knowledge is powerful - those who possess it seem to rule the world. Those who close their minds to it fall into crude ideas about how the economy works. In this seminar, we would like to examine economic knowledge from a historical and anthropological perspective. The primary aim is to historicize and critically discuss ideas and misconceptions about modern economics. The seminar is divided into four blocks: (1) What is “the market”? (2) Knowledge and interpretation: Measurement, prices, time (3) Risk and speculation; (4) Economic expertise. We read and discuss literature from history, sociology and anthropology on these topics.
This course takes place in cooperation with the Department of History at the University of Basel. Students will give short input presentations and have the opportunity to write a term paper on one of the topics mentioned. |
