Title |
Methods for Assessing Social-Cognitive Processes |
Description |
Social-cognitive processes shape many aspects of life and are a key focus across several areas of psychology. The methods used to study these processes are as diverse as the phenomena themselves: researchers code video recordings of interactions, track eye movements while viewing socially relevant images, analyze decisions in social-economic games, measure physiological and neural responses to social stimuli and events, and more. The emergence of new technologies has led to new forms of social interaction as well as new opportunities for experimental manipulation and measurement — for example, analyzing behavior in social networks, in interactions with computer-controlled agents, or with others in virtual reality. In this seminar, we will examine some of these methods for studying social-cognitive processes. We will learn about key findings obtained with each method, but we will also explore the practical aspects of using them (required hardware, software, and analysis techniques), and discuss methodological challenges and debates (e.g., psychometric evaluation of behavioral measures; the tension between internal and ecological validity). Through historical perspectives, we will consider how the origins of certain methods in adjacent fields (e.g., eye-tracking from cognitive psychology, multi-user VR from human-computer interaction) have shaped their use in psychology. We will also discuss how new methods have been developed both in response to theoretical questions and, in turn, have influenced the development of theories themselves (“tools-to-theories”). Overall, the seminar aims to provide a practical, yet reflective and historically informed overview of key methods for studying social-cognitive processes. |
