| Title |
Health and Society |
| Description |
Health is a central aspect of human well-being and social welfare. It is the result of the interplay between genetic factors and the influences of the natural and social environment. While in developing countries it is primarily communicable diseases that jeopardise public health, in developed countries it is mainly non-communicable diseases that are responsible for shortened lifespans and the impairment of quality of life. Lifestyle and aspects of mental health play an important role in this. At the same time, health opportunities are socially stratified within countries.
The seminar deals with the description and explanation of morbidity and mortality as well as the genesis of health in the population. Current empirical findings on the socio-economic, socio-demographic, personality-related and environmental determinants of health and illness are discussed. The focus here is on the question of what role social causation (e.g. "successful people are healthier") plays in comparison to selection (e.g. "healthy people are more successful"). Furthermore, the social consequences of health and illness are explained in the seminar and the main features of health policy intervention are discussed in the light of health promotion and disease prevention. The effectiveness of political measures to contain infectious diseases (e.g. COVID-19) are also discussed. In addition, the seminar deals with the organisation of the health care system and the distribution and development of central health indicators in international comparison.
Prerequisites:
The seminar is particularly suitable for students who are interested in empirical-analytical research. A basic understanding of statistics is helpful. The course language is English.
