Description |

Economic anthropology forms a core part in social anthropology with a longstanding historical background. It is based on the reciprocal influence of economics and anthropology. The sub-discipline has and was influenced by the debates on classical and neo-classical economics and rational choice theories and related critiques from substantivist, structuralist and Marxist positions. These were and are discussed in reference to ethnographies on hunter-gatherer, nomadic-pastoral as well as horticultural and peasant societies.
On the basis of central theoretical reflections the lecture offers an introduction in processes of production, distribution and consumption of goods and services in all sorts of societies. Apart from topics related to these issues the lecture focuses on division of labour, gender, competition, value and money as well as on the way markets work and property rights play an important role in local economies in a globalized world. In addition, the lecture offers an introduction to the relationship between economics and politics as well as to new institutionalism in social anthropology. This approach is combined with topics relevant for ecological anthropology such as common pool resources as managed in common property institutions (rules, laws regulations, norms) and related to external and market changes as well as to issues of power and ideological sources of legitimacy. Finally, new tendencies and relevant areas of applied anthropology (including sustainability) in the sub-discipline are presented. |
