Exercises:
• Exercises will be provided weekly on ILIAS after the lectures and will remain accessible for 2 weeks. While completion is mandatory, they will not be required for exam registration. The lecturers will monitor the progress of students through these exercises, which will aid ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the course material.

• Academic dishonesty, plagiarism, and any other kind of fraud will lead to the exclusion from the course and/or a fail grade (grade 1) in the assessment.

• Interactions during lectures are welcome and encouraged
• No food and beverages in the laboratories of the practical courses

Description:
The course describes the basic principles of cellular biology and microbiology. Its aim is to provide general knowledge covering the structure and function of subcellular compartments, such as membranes, mitochondria, nuclei, cytoskeleton, etc. By examining the inner workings of cells, this course also fosters a deeper comprehension of their role within a whole organism. The course is divided into 4 parts.
1- Cellular bricks: Structure and vital function of key biomolecules, such as sugars, lipids, amino acids, nucleotides.
2- Cellular activities: From DNA to proteins (structure of DNA, RNA, chromatin and genes, transcription, translation, replication, gene regulation and enzymology), transport across biological membranes, cell division and differentiation (cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions are described together with cell cycle, cell division, control of cell growth and apoptosis.), metabolism (important metabolic pathways like glycolysis and respiratory chain are discussed in detail, and how those pathways are used in physiology)
3- Microbiology: A brief introduction touching the microbial world: systematics, prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms as well as viruses. The course finishes with the basics of the action of antibiotics, disinfection and aseptic techniques and their relevance in medicine and laboratory work.
