| Title |
Lecture: Gender and Religion |
| Description |
Public debates on abortion, virginity, new forms of masculinity or clothing practices are just a few contemporary examples that demonstrate how closely concepts of gender are linked to religious worldviews. Within the context of religious traditions, gender roles are, on the one hand, defined, bodies and sexuality are regulated. On the other hand, references to transcendence make it possible to form subversive concepts of gender and to challenge binary gender constructions. Sometimes both – consolidation and subversion – occur side by side.
The lecture explores the complex interplay between gender and religion. We will discuss theoretical approaches to this complexity, analyse current case studies, consider queer perspectives and reflect on our own positions. |
