| Title |
BA/MA SYS Seminar: Religion and Popular Music: Systematic and Empirical Approaches |
| Description |
Lady Gaga rides a motorbike with Jesus, Taylor Swift explores the concept of karma, Harris J prays to Allah: popular music is full of references to religious traditions and practices. Religious symbols are included, adapted and popularised. Whilst some musicians express religious feelings and questions through their songs, religious symbols are also used playfully and/or to criticise society and religion.
In this course, we will explore the function of religious symbols in popular music. We will approach this topic from both a theoretical and empirical perspective: firstly, we will discuss theoretical approaches to religion in popular culture. In the second part of the seminar, we will analyse selected songs from various popular music genres |
