This course offers an introduction to Indigenous Filmmaking and explores film as a means of artistic, cultural and political expression for Indigenous communities in transnational and transcultural contexts.
Using selected examples from North and South America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific region and South-East Asia, participants analyse narrative strategies, production conditions and the historical, political, aesthetic and ethical dimensions of Indigenous media practice. The focus is on narrative traditions and aesthetics, as well as questions of representation, self-determination and cultural sovereignty. Topics covered include decolonial strategies of cinematic realisation, histories of colonial violence and trauma, forms of resistance and activism, and the relationships between land, body and community.
The aim is to develop an in-depth understanding of contemporary indigenous film cultures and their significance in a global context. |
