Political Exile from Eastern Europe in Historical and Contemporary Perspective: Life Histories between (In)Voluntariness and Transmigration |
| Description |
The starting point for this course on political exile from Eastern Europe in historical perspective is a series of
contemporary observations. Following the violent suppression of protests in Belarus in 2021/2022 by the
authoritarian presidential regime under Lukashenko, politically active individuals and members of the
opposition were forced to flee into exile abroad, among them Olga Shparaga, Svetlana Alexievich, and others.
In the context of intensifying repression against so-called “foreign agents” and individuals such as Mikhail
Khodorkovsky or Alexei Navalny, who openly criticized existing political conditions, many people were
compelled to leave authoritarian, increasingly quasi-fascist Russia and seek protection and refuge in exile.
Furthermore, Russia’s violation of international law through its attack on Ukraine forced many Ukrainians to
flee the devastating war and seek safety in other countries. |
