Title Epistemic Injustice and Disability (GS)
Description Since philosopher Miranda Fricker coined the term ‘epistemic injustice’ in 2007, the field has grown rapidly, encompassing both theoretical investigations and applied analyses. This seminar focuses on the intersection of epistemic injustice and disability, examining how the epistemic agency of people with disabilities is often denied in everyday life, as well as in research on the injustices they face. At the same time, the course explores how engaging with disability as a social, political, and relational category and axis of inequality allows one to question the fundamental notions that underpin epistemic injustice theories, such as how knowledge and the epistemic subject are conceived. The seminar thus addresses a notable gap in the literature: while epistemic injustice has been widely studied in relation to other forms of social marginalisation, such as those based on race and gender, its implications for disability remain largely overlooked and underexplored. Drawing on theoretical and empirical engagements from philosophy, disability studies, and the social sciences, the course critically examines the implications of epistemic injustice for people with disabilities, offering insights into how epistemic injustice permeates our research practices and methodologies.

The course is funded by FIV and a cooperation between Gender Studies & Philosophy.
