Title Seminar: Feminist epistemology and philosophy of science, wp, th, pr (Study regulations 2013)
Description This course version is for students following the old study regulations 2013.

Philosophy of science critically studies scientific methods and theories, as well as the contract between science and society. In this regard, philosophy of science discusses the standards at work in the production of scientific knowledge. It generally considers science as an autonomous enterprise which should pursue only its own ends, namely the understanding of the empirical world and the search for truth through theories. What are the contributions of a feminist approach on science? In this course, we will study how traditional concepts such as objectivity and truth have been revised in feminist epistemology and philosophy of science. We will explore the multiple ways power imbalances and dominant biases shape knowledge and may undermine the expertise of groups that have been and are historically underrepresented in science, and we will discuss the solutions provided in the literature. While promoting knowledge that supports social justice, feminist epistemology and philosophy of science put forward normative recommendations regarding the aims scientific theories should pursue to generate knowledge, and the ways the scientific community should operate to guarantee sufficient critical reflexivity and diversity of points of view. We will also examine how feminist epistemology and philosophy of science (can) contribute in the debates regarding ecological crisis, climate change and use of technology.
